The spacecraft had suddenly returned, aborting its lunar mission after just four days. When he asked for authorization to return, Captain Maurhus was unable to explain the reasons. To tell the truth, the communication was very disturbed, the voice came and went, the images, not at all clear, appeared faded. The captain himself seemed to have lost his color and his voice came from afar, as if he were speaking from the spaceship without a microphone. No other member of that team had been seen or heard from.
At the base they were wondering what had happened. No one could have called off a mission like that without a really good reason. Commander Leithos was given the task of receiving the spacecraft and interrogating the Special Data captain. First he would order an investigation inside the spaceship, to verify that all the instruments were working and that all the crew were in good health. Then he would force Maurhus to clarify that unexpected return. When Leithos entered the ship, he found only darkness and silence. The device's sensors showed no signs of life inside. But if they were all dead… then who had landed the spaceship? Then a faint sound made him turn around. Captain Maurhus was there, motionless, and stared at him dreamily.
Leithos saluted him and the captain responded. There was something ghostly about his paleness. He looked at him with blank eyes and his voice seemed to come from beyond the grave. There was something disturbing about the man, Leithos thought. Then the others arrived too and Leithos then froze. He glanced furtively at the sensors on his left. From what they showed, he was the only life form in there. It was a shiver he felt down his spine. In that narrow space, in that unreal atmosphere, the figures before him all appeared the same... the glassy eyes, the motionless figures, the deadly pale faces.
