Italics

One thing that's been puzzling me is the printing of some words and phrases in italics. They don't seem to represent speech or, as I thought at first, interior thoughts. They seem almost random.
My current theory is that the italicised bits are meant to be emphasised when reading aloud (which is probably the best way to read Umbrella).
Any thoughts?

I agree in terms of reading aloud. But I don't think that's what the italics are for. The reader on the Today programme wasn't reading it like that.
